Movie Review

Venom – Let There Be Carnage is a new addition in venom movie series. "Venom" may have been one of for worst Marvel films of all time. Film has a depressing 30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But that didn't stop audiences even me from swarming to see a bug-eyed Tom Hardy embody the character in the corny 2018 standalone, which grossed an extraordinary $864 million or more worldwide. No surprise, then, that Sony rushed to greenlight a sequel in early 2019 that would pit Venom against his most recognisable non-Spidey nemesis.

Interview

We switch to San Quentin, where intrepid reporter Eddie Brock-slash-Venom (Hardy, playing both) interviews Cletus (Harrelson) in the hopes of getting some information out of him about the bodies of the people he serially murdered. Meanwhile, Venom is present in Eddie's mind the entire time, chattering away like the damned's DVD commentary. Occasionally manifesting as a smear of tar-black CGI with a pair of evil teardrop eyes, usually when no one is looking.

At this stage, I'm having difficulty recognizing the Eddie-Venom evolution from the first film. Which deserves to be transported back to the abyss of ignored memory. They're now compassionate psychos. Except Venom still wants to eat human brains because that kind of nonsense is hilarious when you're 11.

He has to make do with chickens, which is the Venom same as of vampires going to the butcher shop for a carton of pig plasma. A joke aimed at 11-year-olds but only funny if you're a lot older than that. Though most people who are a lot older won't laugh.

In just about any case, Eddie appears to be handling the problem of connecting a brain with an alien slobberbeast. That every once in a while makes a huge mess of the kitchen while preparing breakfast. Like a real Oscar to Eddie's Felix, a reference that only people much older than 11 will try to steal from the air like Miyagi's chopsticks to a fly.

Eddie and Venom conclude the following: they still have feelings for Eddie's ex-girlfriend, Anne. It's still unclear what Venom possesses; is he humanoid? If so, do they have access to the device and everything it can do? The world has gone mad until it breaks grievously. "Emotional pain — it hits much harder and lasts much longer," Venom tells Eddie now that Anne has a new fiancee.

Cletus transformation

When Cletus transforms into Carnage, the crimson Venom. She inevitably becomes a damsel in distress, though of course Cletus-Carnage appears right after Eddie and Venom split up. Literally, invoking the universal distress we all feel when our alien symbiotes vamoose with nary a lick of couples counselling. Leaving us vulnerable to slavering serial killers-turned-hideous-monsters.

Best Dialogue

Eddie points out the inappropriateness of Venom’s actions, and also inadvertently reviews his own movie: “That was abusive.”
